ABSTRACT
The Birmingham History Department, or School of History, saw only three occupants of the Chair of Medieval History in the second half of the twentieth century, Harry Cronne, Ralph Davis and Nicholas Brooks. During that time the department, or grouping of medieval historians, grew in distinction and reached a peak of scholarly achievement in Nicholas Brooks’s time as professor.
