ABSTRACT

Themajorityofmuseumsconcentratetheresourcestheyhaveallocatedto archaeologyonthecollectionofarchivesfromsystematicfieldarchaeology projects.Casualfindsmadebypeoplewalkingthedog,workinginthe garden,ploughingtheland,andsoonarethesedaysonlycollectedtofill gapsinacollection'stypeseriesofartefacts.However,inrecentyearsmany museumsintheUKhavebecomedisenfranchisedfromtheorganisation andimplementationofsystematicfieldarchaeologyprojects.Thereare notableexceptionstothistrendwhereintegratedservicesarestillprovided, suchasNorfolkandExeter,forexample,butthesearenowtheexception ratherthantherule.
