ABSTRACT

The connection between sensation seeking, motorcycle use and rider crash risk is one that has been much discussed (Mannering and grodsky 1995; Sexton, Hamilton, Baughan, Stradling and Broughton 2006). Part of this argument stems from the fact that riders have a higher risk of being seriously injured or killed than four-wheel road users (dfT 2007c; RoSPA 2001); some believe that it is this increased risk that acts as an activity attractor. While the previous chapter examined theories of risk, there was little discussion of what risk is. This chapter explores issues of definition before examining risk taking behaviour and the related concept of sensation seeking.
