Characteristicofmedievalscholasticismwasthedesiretobringthis newmaterialtogetherwiththeologicalteachingandthetraditionalliberal artsinonecomprehensivebodyofknowledge.Inthesearchformodels fortheevermorepressingproblemofthesystematicpresentationof doctrine,themasterswerefrrstguidedbyBoethiusandthenbyEuclid. BoethiushadunderstoodscienceintheAristoteliansenseofdoctrine whichtakesitsdeparturefromfirstprinciplesandproceedstocertain conclusionsbystrictdemonstration.WriterslikeGilbertofPoitiers soughttosystematizeallthesciencesonthismodel.Acquaintancewith Euclidtowardtheendofthecenturyledsometotakehisaxiomatic methodasastillbettermodelforthesystematicpresentationofa traditionalbodyofknowledge.Effortsweremadebyauthorslike NicholasofAmienstodeveloptheologicaldoctrineaccordingly.
