What is the self; what am I? No question of modern philosophy has been asked as keenly as this one, and with good reason, for the answer we give it is also our answer to the question ‘What is the world?’. I cannot know the world until, being part of the world, I know myself, and I cannot know myself until I know the world; for as Nietzsche’s mouthpiece Zarathustra puts it, “the belly of being does not speak to man except as man”.1
