ABSTRACT

Book owners claimed possession of their early books and manuscripts, as we have seen in the previous chapters, by painting their coats of arms and emblems and by inscribing their names and moĴoes on pages. Many volumes are personalized with their “portraits,” as well as with prayers to patron saints. Testaments and inventories also testify to now-lost volumes. Bretons collected a variety of books on religious teachings, biblical and world history, and morality, as well as the omnipresent book of hours. Why were particular titles or genres collected?
