ABSTRACT

The purpose of this chapter is to review project excellence and maturity models and explore their links and efficacy with the variables of project quality and project excellence.

The use of the word ‘maturity’ implies capabilities which must be grown over time in order to produce repeatable success in project management (Westerveld, 2003) ‘Excellence’ connotes the achievement of a sustainable standard of success criteria (European Foundation of Quality Management, 2003). Maturity relates to the project organisation and excellence relates to the project outcome. The purpose of project excellence and maturity models is to enhance an organisation’s ability to implement organisation strategy and project objectives through a successful and consistent delivery of projects. The underlying assumption is that the greater the maturity, the greater will be the effectiveness and efficiency in implementing projects. Consequently, the strategic organisational performance will also be elevated and is in turn expected to contribute to project excellence.
