ABSTRACT

A common problem during project implementation is the abandonment of all leadership activities when the task falls behind. Meetings are cancelled and people are put under pressure to work harder and more unreasonably. The project manager needs to address three principal areas; the achievement of the task, the satisfaction of individual needs and the maintenance of the team. The successful delivery of the task or the project can only be achieved using individuals who are motivated through the satisfaction of their own needs, preferably working in a cohesive team which is being maintained by the actions of the project manager. Ned Herrmann gives a metaphorical view of best practice project leadership. The dangers of over emphasis on logic, analysis, administration and structure can be seen; and so too the dangers of left brain only approaches to project implementation. The effective project leader is required to operate in all quadrants at some time or another during project delivery.
