ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on issues of selecting material for collections in the digital environment from a national point of view. Restricted financial resources are well known to most heritage institutions and they have their pros and cons. The selection of material for the Finnish collections should support the technical solutions for the multilingual use of European collections. The selection of electronic publications for preservation is difficult. The rapid development of electronic publishing is forcing libraries to make decisions without knowing the future preservation options. The selection decisions made when starting digitization projects are the most important and critical for success. Digital publishing on the Web and offline has grown rapidly in recent times and will continue to grow. Legal issues have to be dealt with where more recent material is concerned. The producer of the radio programme is the one who makes the selection and preservation decisions.
