ABSTRACT

This chapter is about error management strategies directed at the individual maintainer and at the work team. Although, as indicated in Chapter 6, many maintenance incidents reflect system problems, the maintainers themselves are the last line of defence in that system. Most workers have little control over system issues such as hours of work, equipment and work schedules, but there are things that individuals can do to reduce their chances of being involved in an incident. Most importantly, our skills, habits, beliefs and knowledge can all be changed in ways that increase the reliability of human performance.
