ABSTRACT

The Problem-Solving Process (PSP) wheel breaks down our problem-solving activities into eight defined areas, much like a map. The eight areas provide reference points to manage our problem-solving journey. By using the PSP wheel to manage our problem-solving journey, we can distance ourselves from emotion and chaos surrounding actual problem, deliberately managing our attention through creative techniques to locate, define and solve problem. The PSP wheel offers us same advantages as a helicopter does to the commander overflying battlefield. We can choose to get physically involved in firefights on the ground, raising morale by our presence; but by viewing the battle from the air, we have the opportunity to see the big picture, and manage our resources of time, people and attention, to win the battle with the least cost. When making a transition, it is a good idea to check that everyone agrees to the move: either backwards, forwards or skipping to another position on the PSP wheel.
