Common Nouns as Plural Referring Expressions

My main claim in the previous chapter was that in contrast to the predicate calculus, natural language has not only singular, but also plural referring expressions. Expressions that are used in this way include, I argued, piural pronouns, demonstratives and definite descriptions, and conjunctions or disjunctions of these and of singular referring expressions. That is, I claimed that natural language has expressions belonging to a semantic category that is absent from the predicate calculus.
