ABSTRACT

There is no doubt that the use of online and mobile technologies offers students a measure of freedom and flexibility. This chapter describes some of the options and gives the opportunity to plan our time, and to consider where to start in acquiring basic IT skills. Studying using online media offers some flexibility in when and where one can study. Whatever our course, one will need regular access to a computer with a reasonably up-to-date operating system and a reliable broadband connection. Not all students have their own equipment, and campus-based institutions commonly provide Internet access in the library, student residence or learning centre. Many students make use of mobile devices to allow flexibility to study in different places and most use their phone to keep in touch with fellow students using SMS texting. One of the challenges of online study is that it can be full of distractions.
