ABSTRACT

This chapter establishes that the geography of contemporary tourism is the result of complex and interdependent global and local dynamics. The constant reshaping of the local is simultaneous with the globalization processes of this and related industries. The definition of the tourism industry has raised many problems and controversies. According to N. Leiper the tourism industry comprises the firms which purposely undertake the joint coordination of their activities for the purpose of servicing tourists. In airlines and transportation services, it is not the emergence of perfect markets, but the emergence of low costs which is the basic consequence of the internet. The same could be shown for the online agencies. The emergence of mobile technologies is symptomatic of the 'restless' nature of tourism in the sense of Metcalfe. The internet has revolutionized the sectoral system of production and innovation of the tourism industry.
