ABSTRACT

This chapter explains the situation for the Japanese professional business service firms in Singapore through discussing three of the studied sub-sectors in more detail. The mini-cases will cover the activities of one leading sogo shosha, one of the biggest Japanese advertising agencies, and finally one research institute. The service sector has risen to become the most dominant part of the advanced Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries' economies. In a comparison with most advanced OECD countries, Japan appears to be somewhat different in terms of the GDP and employment share generated by the service sector. Apart from the macroeconomic problems of the region in the late 1990s the Japanese companies expressed concern with other problems of running business in Singapore. The advertising agency is one of the biggest in Japan and has a strong position among Japanese clients. Its organizational structure was set up in 2001.
