Miller had been a soldier, his experience in the army had been traumatic, and the American Civil War, which lasted from 1861 to 1865, had resulted in large casualties: at least 620,000 soldiers were killed – perhaps as many as 850,000, according to one historian – and around 50,000 civilians. Some 8 per cent of the white male population lost their lives, and many were le maimed.
