ABSTRACT

It was during Nathan H. Knorr’s presidency that the Watch Tower Society’s own translation of the Bible was published, and Frederick W. Franz, who was to become Knorr’s successor, had a major role in its production. Since the Bible is the supreme source of authority for Jehovah’s Witnesses on all matters relating to theology, history and institutional organisation, it is important to ensure that one has an accurate rendering of the original Hebrew and Greek texts. e Watch Tower Society has never produced an additional creed or articles of faith, since it believes that there is no reason to add anything to scripture. As Russell contended, one of the marks of the ancient Church’s apostasy was to compile statements of faith such as the Nicene Creed, the Athanasian Creed, the Apostles’ Creed, and various other confessions of faith that contained extra-biblical material, a substantial amount of which was derived from pagan philosophy, such as Aristotelian doctrines of substance and accidents, facilitating such claims as Jesus Christ being of one ‘substance’ with the Father, and arming that God is three ‘persons’ in one deity.
