Adverse Impacts of Incarceration

This chapter briefly discusses some of the more prevalent negative impacts of incarceration on African-American community and family life. Incarceration, especially if of a disproportionate and continuous nature not only exacts a heavy toll on inmates’ physical and mental health, but also deprives African-American community from one of its most important human capital elements, adult males thus negatively impacting youths socialization within both family and community structures.
