ABSTRACT

History, they say is a great teacher. So this paper will begin with a brief analysis of accident data over the last 40 years. The data is provided by lATA (2000) and a sunnnary is provided in Figure 9.1 below. The data indicate the variation in aviation 'safety' using as a measure the number of aircraft hulls lost as a proportion of the number of sectors flown. To smooth out the large year by year variation in this measure the data has been averaged across eight five-year intervals.
