ABSTRACT

As John Wilson and Andrew Popp point out in the introduction to this volume the industrial history of England can be written as a history of regions and industrial districts, a variegated narrative, rich in empirical detail and theoretical challenges. The purpose of this paper is to confront the literature on embeddedness and trust, presented in Chapter 1, with the complex pattern of relations that made up the jewellery industry in Birmingham in the late nineteenth-century.
