ABSTRACT

Many etic definitions of ‘New Age’ exist in the literature. The actors might be ignorant of certain cosmological ideas and their theoretical underpinnings that are taken to be key elements of ‘New Age’ culture. In sociology, there are different ways to describe ‘New Age’. In France, Champion gives a descriptive classification for this New Age spirituality. New Agers’ detachment from systematised belief and practice poses one among the many problems confronting emic representations already raised in the literature. People can find a divine spark within themselves and to find and ignite it, the spiritual worker only needs to be spiritually trained; this leads to the realisation of human potential. Spiritual Knowledge connotes knowing the ultimate reality or the secret of everything. There are many ways to reach Spiritual Knowledge and according to the teachers of perennial philosophy, seekers of knowledge have to choose the path they think is the most suitable for them.
