ABSTRACT

The word strategy is widely used in all spheres of management and business. The word originally comes from the Greek strategos, meaning generalship. The profligate use of the word strategy makes it worth exploring the differences between strategy, strategic planning and strategic leadership. The terms are sometimes used interchangeably and provide a somewhat confusing background for understanding the particular challenges of strategic leadership. Strategic planning is seen as a process by which strategy emerges. Strategic planning can be a useful tool in helping develop a strategy and understanding the tool sets and ability to make strategy are important functions that an effective strategic leader must master, but they are not the only things that a strategic leader must do well. Strategic leaders are working on the boundary between the organisation they are responsible for and the broader environment. The nature of the truly strategic level presents leaders with significant challenges.
