Illustrative Example The example we use is the consultancy project mentioned in the Introduction to Part 3, where only a week into that project there was a complex situation to deal with. As we explained, both manufacturing sites saw no reason for the project, as it was currently defined, but they were still prepared to consider some kind of intervention that could benefit the business. Briefly, how this situation came about was that a new chairman of the company perceived a need for improved communication between the two sites and decided a project was needed to identify a new system for improving communication. Unfortunately, however, what seems to have been overlooked was the fact that both sites were operating as profit centres and therefore had no incentive to improve communication, and hence saw no need for the project.
