Iconoclasm and Religious Images in the Early Lutheran Tradition

During the period of the Protestant Reformation, pictures and statues in churches and monasteries were removed violently in several places. In most cases, especially in the early years of the Reformation, the citizens took the responsible and active part in these actions, while in the later Reformation period the initiative most often came from a new Protestant Obrigkeit in the person of the bishop or chancellor.
