ABSTRACT

The third set of predictor variables identified concerns a group of factors that may be termed 'psychological' variables. A large body of research exists that has sought to predict environmental behaviour according to a number of social-psychological theories and individual personality variables. These are grouped together here for clarity. Among the theories that have been used to predict waste-related behaviour is Schwartz's (1977) model of normative influences on altruism. It has been used widely to provide models of recycling and environmental behaviour. Individual variables include the use of subjective, the role of personal and response efficacy, the importance of environmental threat and the influence of logistical problems on behaviour.
