ABSTRACT

In this chapter, I will discuss Jeremy Bentham's contribution to the study of political fallacies. I The subject of 'political fallacies' is a neglected area in the professional literature on argumentation.~ Except for Bentham's Handbook of Political Fallacies (Handbook), no monograph treats political fallacies systematically as a topic in its own right.) Bentham's book did not receive the attention and appreciation it deserves. In some respects, it is a misinterpreted and misunderstood book, even by people who praise it. One of the main mistakes is that Bentham's book is taken to be a rhetorical treatise. I will argue that it is essentially dialectical in nature and try to show that, from a pragmadialectical perspective, it is a valuable contribution to the study of political fallacies.
