ABSTRACT

HUD training has historically been left to the pilot to learn on his own (1). Since HUDs were not considered ‘flight instruments’, no need was seen to develop training syllabi or procedures, other than for mission-specific tasks (such as weapons delivery). As civil operators began to operate HUD-equipped airplanes, more attention was paid to developing HUD-specific training. However, as with military operators, this training was very task specific (such as monitoring a Category III instrument approach).
