ABSTRACT

After several years of hesitation on which organizational form to choose, Les Verts were finally founded in 1984. One of their mottoes was ‘doing politics differently’ (‘La politique autrement’). More than 20 years later, is this motto still valid? In this chapter, we shall demonstrate that the organizational transformation of the French Greens is very much linked, on the one hand, with major shifts between intra-party factions and with the subsequent changes in the direction of much more coalition-seeking and electoralist strategies (Villalba and Vieillard-Coffre 2003). On the other hand, we shall examine how another, more gradual factor has also played a key role: the transformation of the organizational cultures of its activists and leaders.
