ABSTRACT

Invent a time machine. Travel back to the late 1980s, kidnap a supply chain executive and bring him/her back. Some of what the executive would see of today’s supply chain world would look frighteningly different: Web-based public and private marketplaces, third-and fourth-party logistics providers (3PLs and 4PLs), and collaborative planning and forecasting. New thinking, enabled by new technologies, has resulted in the emergence of some very different business practices.
