ABSTRACT

An internationally recognized best-of-breed supply chain is the aspiration of most supply chain executives and managers. However, history shows that very few will be able to deliver on this aspiration. The reason for this is the size, geographic dispersion and complexity of modern supply chains. It is not a question of not wanting the outcome enough, it is a question of who has the capability to synchronize and continuously improve the large numbers of people, assets and complex technology involved in major supply chains. The good news is that there are people out there who have achieved and sustained best-of-breed status. They have achieved this through a smart combination of clear strategic thinking, excellent execution, relevant use of technology, engagement of the right people and partners, and by embedding continuous innovation into everything they do.
