ABSTRACT

This chapter considers how coaching can be effectively implemented. Coaching is more than simply providing feedback on performance. Effective coaching is where the individual understands what the skill or technique being coached is why it is appropriate and how to apply it in a way that works for them. A big part of coaching is also taking the opportunity to offer praise and encouragement for good performance. Coaching activity over a period of time enables individuals to perform to the best of their ability. The aim of coaching is simply to improve individual performance, continuously. It's a skill and it's about development and performance enhancement, not assessment. When a manager steps into the role of coach, they leave behind the role of overseer and manager. Coaches develop and maximize the talents of their staff. The coach may routinely perform some of the duties of their staff but should recognize that their true role is to enable other staff to perform.
