ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the data analysis taken from a larger project exploring St Helenian older pupils' students' and adults' changing views of both the outside world and the island's culture following the introduction of new technologies. Individual telephone interviews were undertaken with five St Helenian students undertaking higher education courses in UK universities or colleges. Whilst some students referred to the value of using E-mail for business, more generally the new technologies were regarded as being useful for wider social purposes although some islanders had little or no access to the E-mail. All students acknowledged the benefits of the Internet. Many islanders were now able to utilise both the Internet and E-mail. Television channels on the island showed predominantly South Africa and North American programmes. One of the notable virtues that students ascribed to the new communication technologies was that it had brought about a heightened awareness of, and knowledge of, the outside world to St Helena.
