ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the changing economic geography of Botswana within the context of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the wider context of globalisation. It highlights a set of adjustments made in response to globalisation and the resultant consequences for the making and re-making of economic geographies in Botswana. National development objectives seek to improve the well-being of all Botswana. Development is seen in the broader context of political and social welfare as embodied in Botswana's four national principles of democracy, development, self-reliance and unity. Botswana's rapid economic changes have been characterised by a decline in the agricultural sector. Cattle-farming is the only agricultural activity which has prospered in Botswana. The most important sector of Botswana's economy outside mining is livestock rearing. Most tourism activity in Botswana is nature-based and concentrated in the northern part of the country. The manufacturing sector is crucial for the diversification of the Botswana economy and provision of employment opportunities.
