ABSTRACT

The airline industry has recognized the need in many states to address political and other concerns relating to the environment and the fact that the noise climate in areas adjacent to airports is linked to the ability of airports to provide expanded travel facilities to meet the growing demand for air travel. The Council goes on to state that it considers the development of an internationally agreed environmental charge or tax on air transport that all states would be expected to impose would appear not to be practicable at the time, given the differing views of states and the significant organization and practical implementation problems that would be likely to arise. As regards market demand for air transport services, the prognosis is ominous. In the air transport sector, the total scheduled traffic carried by airlines amounted to a total of 1647 million passengers and some 30.2 million tonnes of freight.
