ABSTRACT

All aircraft move in a three-dimensional space. As the aircraft moves it necessarily imparts forces on the pilot's body. These whole body motion forces are sensed by the pilot through a variety of non-visual systems. The forces imposed on the pilot by an aircraft and the pilot's response to these non-visual motion sensations play an important role in a variety of flying tasks. Attempts to recreate these sensations in ground-based simulators have a long, and somewhat controversial, history in flight simulation.
