ABSTRACT

Given the causes of fatigue and the disastrous consequences that tiredness in the cockpit sometimes produce, there is little doubt that combating this insidious and pervasive threat to aviation safety deserves high priority. Obviously, the best fatigue countermeasures are preventive strategies that are designed to ensure adequate sleep and optimal circadian adaptation before reporting for duty. However, as was previously discussed, both civil and military aviation operations are often not conducive to promoting the daily sleep and rest that is essential for the best possible performance.
