ABSTRACT
During the two decades of its independence prior to World War II, Czechoslovakia emerged as one of the world’s top ten leading industrial powers. Under Soviet hegemony, however, the economy deteriorated and lost its position. The Velvet Revolution has brought new chances for the country to catch up. The massive reform process, which started in 1991, was complicated by the split of the country in January 1993.
