ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the process of re-peasantisation, on the level of agricultural structure as well as farmers' rationalities and identities. It analyses process of changing rural communities and their relations with the so-called macro-social order. The chapter argues that the typical clientelist relation between peasant and landlord was preserved, to some extent, in the relation between 'post-traditional' peasant farmers and the local state bureaucracy. It addresses the change in the local rural community, which forms the social environment of peasant farms and farm families. The local community, together with family, rural household and the peasant class, was the basic element of the rural and peasant system of life. So rural community should be included in the debate about de-peasantisation and re-peasantisation in contemporary Poland. In the sociology of the peasantry, the community question is a question about social ties among peasants. Economic reforms led to the fall of cooperative organisations and other structures providing services for agriculture.
