ABSTRACT

Antun Radic's hypothesis about the culture of gentlefolk and the culture of the peasant, together with his Questionnaire, marked the beginning of modern Croatian ethnology. The Osnova za sabiranje iproucavanje gradje o narodnom zivotu that was compiled and published by Antun Radic has been largely evaluated from the aspect of its methodological value in ethnology and sociology. Radic points to what would draw the attention of ethnology, that is, the wedding ceremonial which unfolds on the model of behaviour of the former upper estates, not in the last place in the mutual form of address among wedding guests. Antun Radic himself was to touch in an unexpected way on the original vagueness of the relation between the two cultures. After analyzing stylistically the Konavle wedding toasts, Radic pointed out those of their elements that testified to some earlier state and to upper social strata: It is quite natural that the origin of such toasts required some permanent property, even wealth.
