ABSTRACT

A corridor or noisy meeting is not the place to pass along the information required for an important delegation. Schedule sufficient time (without interruption) in your office for the delegation meeting. The first step in delegation is pre-planning on your part. You must give some thought to the delegation process prior to the actual conference. Once you are ready for the delegation meeting, it is helpful to remember the specific steps in the act of delegating work to someone. If the delegatee has a problem with your suggested deadline, be flexible when possible and work out a more suitable time limit. Always elicit from your subordinate a clear and definite acceptance of the delegated task and the intended results. You want more than murmured approval or tacit acceptance. You need an outright statement that the person agrees to the goals and the deadline. Delegation is a definite process.
