ABSTRACT

Successful delegation develops the maximum potential of your team to such a point. As a manager, the important thing is not what happens when you are there, but what happens when you are not there. The very drive and determination that earmark successful workers are often the same qualities which hinder effective delegation. For the past several years a senior manager in a local bank was required to attend a monthly council luncheon of all financial institutions in the community. These luncheons were primarily social and rarely yielded anything that could not have been handled by the manager's assistant. The manager realized that this was a doing job, not a planning job. He called in his assistant and explained the function of this meeting. The young assistant was eager and enthusiastic for a chance to meet her colleagues in a professional setting. This was the perfect opportunity for successful delegation.
