ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at Alvin Plantinga's personal and ecclesiological background in order to gain some understanding of his religious and theological commitments. It focuses on three issues: Plantinga's personal and professional development, his major writings, and themes which have endured in his work throughout the years. The chapter explains the themes of Plantinga's work that highlights several theses which comprise the backbone of Plantinga's approach to religious epistemology. These themes are: Plantinga's understanding of the nature of Christian scholarship, his unapologetically apologetic approach to questions about God, and his appraisal of the relationship between evidence and epistemically acceptable belief in God. In the course of his career, Plantinga has become one of the most respected philosophers of religion in the world. The chapter concludes with a brief appraisal of Plantinga's influence in the academic world.
