ABSTRACT

Renewables in Bulgaria consist of hydro energy, which especially plays a role in the peak-load hours for the country's energy system, and contributes to the country's electricity generation by about 7-8 percent. In the energy policy field, the renewables as an option that meets, to the greatest extent, the requirements for environmentally compatible and sustainable energy development, receives more and more attention on global, regional, national and local scales. The united nations environment program Sustainable Energy Finance Initiative states: 'Instead of climate change from continued investment in fossil fuels, we need to create a climate for change towards a sustainable energy path'. The economic and political conditions of the country, as well as its international relations and obligations, provide the context for the Bulgarian energy policy. There are many barriers and obstacles to the penetration and use of renewables worldwide, and the same situation applies in Bulgaria as well.
