ABSTRACT

One of my most cherished memories of Mark, and of his pleasure in the quirky designs of Anglo-Saxon silver pennies, is the occasion when he proudly showed me his latest acquisition for the Fitzwilliam Museum: an interesting variant of Series M (Figure 7.1). I must confess equal delight, and not a little pride, at being able to immediately point out to him a similar specimen, albeit much worn, in the collection of the Ashmolean Museum: T&S 367 (Figure 7.2).1 A stimulating conversation on the appeal of Anglo-Saxon pennies followed, and how new specimens contribute new perspectives and add to our long list of intriguing question marks. It seems therefore tting to choose precisely these variants of Series M as an appropriate tribute to his memory, and in gratitude for all his guidance and encouragement.
