ABSTRACT

It was immediately apparent that the hoard belonged to the large group of Viking-Age hoards found all over the island of Gotland. From a numismatic perspective the Viking-Age coin hoards can be dened as containing coins from a large number of countries and areas. e earliest hoards date to just aer 8002 and the latest is the Burge hoard, Lummelunda par., deposited aer 1143.3 In the early phase, c.800-990, the coins nearly all come from the Caliphate in the east, while in the latter phase, aer c.990, nearly all coins come from Europe. A quick glance reveals that the Övide hoard belongs to the very end of the Viking-
