ABSTRACT

We have seen that the primary aim for converting an image into a numeric or digital format is to facilitate copying, transmission and processing of that pictorial information. Delivering an image in an encoded format is easier than trying to transmit the continuous, analogue representation of a photograph, drawing or document. Encoding images in this way, and for this purpose, has been done for a surprisingly long time, and an understanding of the development and history of digital images can aid in understanding their fundamental characteristics.
