ABSTRACT

The charm and importance of this project lies in its focus on working with children who are main project content providers. The project aims to establish the European Cultural Heritage Archive. The content of this archive will be based on local heritage from the six partners’ countries. The scientific and general information provided by museologists and teachers will be complemented by the children’s interpretation: CHIMER is supporting the natural creativity and investigation skills of children by encouraging them to explore new tools for creating digital content. Twelve-year-olds in five countries of Europe will follow the guidance of museologists and teachers in building digital maps combining geographical coordinates: these are detected using GPS devices with the creative use of mobile technologies and digital cameras. In this way, children will combine drawings and photographic images with their own comments on items of interest. Little by little, they will participate fully in creating a digital archive of their own towns, villages and surrounding communities which should enhance interest in their regions, not only for children but for other age groups. All these aims correspond to CHIMER official objectives: ● establishing an open international network of schools, children and public

institutions (see Figure 6.1) ● introducing eLearning by developing an innovative paperless direct ‘touch-

and-learn’ cognitive learning method based on a combination of the use of technology and content management

interfacing and user access tools adapted to evolving 3G networked multimedia technology.
