ABSTRACT
The first article, “Rats!,” is based on a pamphlet entitled Rat!!! Rat!!! Rat!!!. The purpose of this pamphlet (and the article, too, though less stridently) was to rouse the nation “to one universal warfare against these midnight marauders and common enemies of mankind” (214).
