ABSTRACT

The shipbuilding sector is one of the major sectors of international activity within the Turkish economy. The shipbuilding sector is highly dependent upon the secondary sector as an auxiliary industry. The history of the Turkish shipbuilding industry is outlines by two sections – shipbuilding during the Ottoman Empire era, between the years 1214–1923 and shipbuilding after the establishment of the Republic of Turkey in 1923. During Ottoman Empire era, amongst the shipyards on the Anatolia peninsula, the Izmir shipyard was notable as an important one. The Izmir shipyard was established in 1326 and belonged to the Principality of Aydin. The period after 1963 is known as the Planned Period because of the Five-year Development Plans that were introduced in Turkey. During the First Five-Year Development Plan between 1963–1967, the main target for the shipbuilding industry was to provide the ships that were needed by Turkish operators, to be constructed by domestic shipyards.
