ABSTRACT
The purpose of this chapter is to outline the steps necessary to formally confirm the appointment of the successful design practice and other project consultants. It includes discussion of the nature of contracts between clients and their consultants to aid the composition of a bespoke form of appointment. Appropriate legal advice should always be sought when writing any contract, but the first step, as for a design project, is to be clear about what you hope to achieve by writing a brief.
